      Raw materials are the individual functional ingredients that make up a finished product — the actives, humectants, thickeners, emollients, proteins, and bases behind every serum, cream, and cleanser. They are the true building blocks of cosmetic formulation.

      Most formulas combine a few essentials: a base (water, hydrosol, oil, or a ready-made base), an emulsifier if you are blending oil and water, one or more active ingredients, a humectant such as glycerin or hyaluronic acid, and a preservative for anything containing water. Thickeners and additives then refine the texture and feel.

      Yes. Any formulation containing water (including aloe, hydrosols, and gels) requires a broad-spectrum preservative to prevent mould, yeast, and bacteria. Browse our Antioxidants & Preservatives collection. Anhydrous (oil-only) products don't need a preservative, but benefit from an antioxidant like Vitamin E to extend shelf life.
