Genuine Manuka Honey from New Zealand is made by bees that collect nectar from the Manuka plant (Leptospermum scoparium) and is renowned worldwide for its beneficial properties. Authentic Manuka Honey is rated through several different and complex systems, including NPA (Non-Peroxide Activity) and MGO (Methylglyoxal).
Testing processes measures all three signature compounds, Leptosperin, DHA, and Methylglyoxal (MGO). The renowned antibacterial health properties of Manuka honey are believed to be more potent, concentrated, and potentially more effective when the NPA number is higher; the higher the MGO is as well.
The MGO rating system identifies a single compound, Methylglyoxal, and was developed by a university professor. Manuka honey comes in a range of MGO ratings. The higher the number on the label, the better the health benefits and antibacterial properties are.
Generally, higher-grade NPA 15 or NPA 20 manuka honeys are more effective at killing active bacterial infections. The higher the NPA rating, the more antibacterial activity the Mānuka honey has and the more MGO (Methylglyoxal) potency it has.
Manuka honey is widely considered the healthiest type of honey. It offers all the health benefits of regular honey. Manuka honey also has a distinctive dark color and intensely rich flavor. Like other honey, the color and taste vary from batch to batch.
Manuka has gained popularity because of its strong antibacterial properties. This mostly comes from the compound methylglyoxal (MGO), although other components also play a role. This makes Manuka much more potent for fighting infections. This is one reason that Manuka is more expensive than different honey varieties and in such high demand.
These are situations where the antibacterial aspects of the honey are significant. As a result, higher levels of antibacterial activity will be more powerful. Some such uses include the following:
For treating acne, hives, and eczema
For fighting a cold or an infection
Applied to the skin to promote wound or burn to heal
For improving digestion or colon health
As a cough or sore throat remedy
Other reasons to use honey include any uses where the antibacterial activity would be an added benefit.
Some other common uses include:
An alternative sweetener
An ingredient in a salve for soothing the skin
Part of a face mask
As a component of the diet
To lower overall inflammation
Please note: Manuka honey is sold by weight, not volume.
Warning: Do not feed honey to infants under two years old. Natural honey crystallizes. In order to return it to a natural state, warm it up in a water bath.
