R-Alpha Lipoic Acid (R-ALA) is the naturally occurring, biologically active form of alpha lipoic acid and is widely recognized as one of the most versatile antioxidants used in cosmetic formulation. Often referred to as the “Universal Antioxidant,” R-ALA is unique because it functions in both water- and oil-compatible environments, helping protect formulations from oxidative stress while supporting the appearance of healthy, vibrant skin.
Unlike many antioxidants that become inactive after neutralizing free radicals, R-ALA has the remarkable ability to regenerate other antioxidants such as Vitamin C, Vitamin E, and Coenzyme Q10, making it a valuable addition to advanced anti-aging, brightening, and protective skincare products.
Because of its chemistry, R-ALA can be challenging to incorporate into formulations. It dissolves readily in propanediol, ethoxydiglycol, ethanol, and ethylhexylglycerin, while having very limited solubility in water and fixed oils. Gentle heating (up to approximately 50°C / 122°F) combined with continuous stirring or homogenization is often recommended to achieve complete solubilization before adding it to the final formulation.
