Alpha Lipoic Acid, naturally found in every cell of the body, is best known as the "Universal Antioxidant"--not just because of its anti-aging properties but also because of its unique ability to regenerate and recycle other beneficial antioxidants in the body, including Vitamins E, C, CoQ10 and others. Because it can regenerate other active ingredients, it's considered an enzyme as well as an antioxidant.
This is a challenging ingredient to solubilize. It is sparingly soluble in caprylic capryl triglyceride - more when heated (50C) and a little soluble in glycerine (requires heating to 50C) and preferably a homogenizer or hot plate with a magnetic stirrer to help get it into solution. You can also add it to surfactant mixtures, where it blends in quite easily. It is soluble in all proportions in propylene glycol, Ethylhexyl glycerin, and with high purity ethanol. Once the ingredient has been solubilized, it can then be added to your base.
