Palmitoyl Pentapeptide-3, was later redefined as Palmitoyl Pentapeptide-4, and was the active peptide in the original Matrixyl formulation. The original development of this peptide was for skin repair, and through studies, it was found to have many benefits for anti-aging as well. This peptide forms a part of Matrikine, which are messengers that regulate cell proliferation and cell-matrix renewal.  Palmitoyl Pentapeptide-3 increases overall collagen production, the production of collagen IV, and hyaluronic acid synthesis in the skin. It is thought that pentapeptides can communicate with a cell and program it to do specific things, including repair work. Palmitoyl Pentapeptide-4 is considered to be as effective against wrinkles as retinol, but less irritating.

Independent in vitro studies demonstrated an increase in the synthesis of Collagen I by 212%, Collagen IV by up to 327%, and Hyaluronic Acid by 267%. Collagen I is the most predominant form of collagen and has a very dramatic effect on rebuilding the skin. Six-month in vivo studies showed mean wrinkle depth was reduced by 17%, a surface area containing deep wrinkles was reduced by 68%, a surface area containing moderate wrinkles was reduced by 51%, and skin roughness by 16%. 

Liposomes are the latest nano-scale technology for the encapsulation of cosmetic actives. This technology uses bilayer lipids(fats) to encapsulate active ingredients and protect them until the point of delivery into the target cell. The lipids used are extremely biocompatible with cell walls allowing them to bond to and release the active ingredient directly into the cells. Studies have shown that this method of delivery helps to time release the actives and increase absorption by as much as 7 times. Not only do you need less of the active ingredient to achieve better results, but the steady absorption over time will increase the benefits between applications.
