Genuine Manuka Honey from New Zealand is made by bees that collect nectar from the Manuka plant (Leptospermum scoparium) and is renowned worldwide for its beneficial properties. Authentic Manuka Honey is rated through several different and complex systems, including UMF (Unique Manuka Factor) and MGO (Methylglyoxal).

UMF is the strictest and highest-graded Manuka honey measurement system and is the only standardized industry-wide indicator of genuine Manuka honey from New Zealand, authenticating potency, purity, freshness, and origin. The UMF testing process measures all three signature compounds, Leptosperin, DHA, and Methylglyoxal (MGO). UMF was developed by independent scientists and consumer protection advocates verifying the accredited laboratory testing guaranteeing 100% Monofloral Manuka. The renowned antibacterial health properties of Manuka honey are believed to be more potent, concentrated, and potentially more effective when the UMF number is higher; the higher the UMF is, the higher the MGO is as well. 

The MGO rating system identifies a single compound, Methylglyoxal, and was developed by a university professor. Manuka honey comes in a range of MGO ratings. The higher the number on the label, the better the health benefits and antibacterial properties are.
